Comments: In PEHS 1964, students didn't move from class to class, you had a home room and only the teachers moved between periods. When Mr.McKay came into our Grade 11 class for French period, he found that someone had stapled the pages of his textbook together. The initial giggles over this didn't help as he became determined to find out who did this. It was the last class before lunch, there was no instruction, the class was in detention for the whole period and no one was going home untill there was a confession. The stalemate continued untill 12:30 when he finally let everyone out without a resolution, but was to be continued after 4pm. It turned out a Grade 12 student had snuck in during recess and did the dirty deed without anyone knowing. After hearing about it, he felt bad about the resulting situation (not the stapling of pages) and confessed to let the class off the hook. That afternoon Mr. McKay made a formal apology to the class.
Comments: Our first Teacher Feature: Mr. Raoul McKay, who passed away just last week, Aug. 24. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Iris McKerlie, also a PEHS teacher (Math) and were married while they were teachers in Shilo. Mr. McKay was our Grade 10, 11 & 12 French teacher at PEHS in the 60's. Like so many of our teachers, his involvement with students didn't end in the classroom. Mr. McKay coached the French Club and Boys and Girls Volleyball teams. After teaching he dedicated his life to his Metis and Indigenous roots.
(From his Obituary) Raoul often combined his dream of being a teacher with his love of sports and coached and supported a number of hockey teams. He loved to play, coach and watch almost any sport. He was involved in bringing the Indigenous Games to Winnipeg and believed in the power of sports to build strong communities. He became in leader in the field of Native Studies and strongly advocated for the rights of Métis and First Nations peoples in Manitoba and throughout Canada. After decades as a teacher, professor and consultant he established First Voice Multimedia with his wife Iris. First Voice allowed Métis and First Nations people to tell their stories about history, culture, art and many other issues from their perspectives and reach broad audiences. Raoul was dedicated to working with young Indigenous people and ensuring they were proud of their roots. He received numerous awards including the National Aboriginal Achievement Award, which recognized his dedication and service to the community.
