Well, shilobrats.com is paid up for another year of site maintenance with OSwebhosting, and we own our domain name for another two years! Thanks to all donations received by shilobrats across the country over the last couple of years. On behalf of the web team, thanks a million.

The Manitoba Topical Map Springs list show both Waggle Springs and Wigle Springs on their list both with identical co-ordinates and description:

Waggle Springs - Spring Manitoba 062G13 49.783ºN 99.720ºW

Wigle Springs - Spring Manitoba 062G13 49.783ºN 99.720ºW

Waggle Springs Natural Resources Canada BRANDON Quad, Manitoba, Topographic Map
Waggle Springs is a Spring in the province of Manitoba (MB), located at latitude - longitude coordinates (also known as lat-long or GPS coordinates) of N 49.7831 and W -99.72. Waggle Springs is shown in the center of the topographic (topo) map, which is sourced from the Natural Resources Canada map NRCan BRANDON quad.

Also a search on Wigle Springs turns up this entry from the Manitoba Conservation Center as late as 2001, suggesting that it might not be a former name, but still be the proper name that is 'also known as' Waggle Springs.

Hi everyone, my familyRalph, Rheta and my sister Lynn) lived in Shilo from 58-63. We lived at 23 Quebec Cres. My father was a cub scout and boy scout leader. Does anyone out there remember the plaster of paris cub head with glass eyes?? My dad passed away in February of 2007, still missed by his family and long time 'Army buddies'. My parents stayed in touch with 'Army buddies' all across Canada. Feel free to e-mail me at the above address with any info. Thanks, Jane

RE Wigle vs. Waggle--

Clearly this confusion goes back a long way. I've also seen references to "Wiggle" springs in some Brandon U. aerial photograhy archives online. If you google "Atlas of Canada Online" the first hit is the Government of Canada map archive, which will give you topographic or satellite photo maps of anywhere in Canada. The NTS topo maps call it "Wigle".

If you go to the second site google gives you, the Canadian Geographic site, there is a map where you can zoom in to anyplace in Canada, down to street level. On that map, the geographic feature is labelled "Wigle Springs" but the road leading to it is labelled "Waggle Springs". As my father-in-law says, "the right way to say it is the way that doesn't get you laughed at by the locals".

Tim, it's funny that you mention the spelling around 'Waggle" vs "Wigle" Springs.

Shortly after arriving in Shilo in Sept. 1960, Mr. Brown gave some sort of essay assignment to my Grade 6 class at O'Kelley.

For whatever reason, I chose to describe riding my bike To "Wigle Springs" (I admit the spelling was a best guess on my part!)and which the was deemed to be in error by said Mr. Brown, and I got a red circle around the word. How nice to be vindicated almost 49 years later!

Thanks!

I just found out that "Waggle" Springs is really called Wigle Springs. Never seeing it written down, it is an easy thing to mis-hear....lots of little kids say "tagger" when they mean "tiger".

As someone who was between 6 and 9 years old when I lived in Shilo in the early 60's, it seemed like quite a long way, but its less than 7 km by road from where I lived on Sapper Avenue.

Shilo administration haven’t given us a specific date yet, but have promised there would be plenty of photos of the event for the ShiloBrats site.(a Special Edition feature is being planned)

ShiloBrats was first alerted to this by Blake Mooney last year. Bill Brown and Faye Helgason were quick to mobilize and arranged with Larry Weisgerber (also a Shilobrat and in charge of the demolition) to remove and prepare the original hardwood floor from the gymnasium stage into 2” x 4” momento pieces. This has already been done and PEH’S of PEPS (pieces of PEPS) or is that too clever, will be offered in exchange for your photos from Shilo (the ones you keep saying you’ll send in) and photos of you today for The Way We Are feature. Don’t wait for the announcement, a list of recipients is already started for the photos coming in and received in the last year. Send us photos, you will be put on the list, and the momentos should be ready for sending out soon. You can do more than just keep the memory of PEHS alive, you can bring it home. Another Special Edition is planned on ways to display your PEHS momento, and a contest for the best momento display. Winner gets the rest of the school.
