Comments: October 1962 - Camp Shilo. I am in Grade 12 with classmates Betty Hunt, Blair, Lawrence Rowland, Ann Davies, Rod McLeod, George Shallcross, Judy Pachal(sp?)Tanis Johnston, Doug Jordan, Gary and several others (memory is toast). Mr Birch brought a TV into the room. We watched the Cuban Missile Crisis unfold before our eyes. We were an hour away from a nuclear war! I had joined the army reserve and as a Lance Bombardier, I expected to be called out. I cannot describe the fear that came to mind. Fortunately, Pres Kennedy and the Russians came to their senses. This year, with two nut cases, one in the US and another in North Korea potentially sparring off,I hope sanity prevails.

Comments: Bump here. .....OK guys and gals for some culinary fun let's exchange favorite soup recipe. It is that time of year. Colder days are warm soups and breads for lunch. My split pea soup is a favorite around here. Many times I include the kitchen sink. One of our friends here gave us a recipe for lentil soup and another for some sort of hamburger vegetable soup. My mum was a Newfie and all of our soups were heavy with fish or corn beef and cabbage and so on. Rabbit stews from the local Shilo wild rabbit supply. My Dad bartered with the farmers around Shilo and outlying area and the greens from the produce ended up in the pot. Homemade breads and hot soup on Shilo winter days was Mmmm. mmmmmm good. Bump

Comments: Brought my Mother (Lois Exell (Dolan)) over to Winnipeg for wedding of step-son's (Kevin Exell) eldest boy (Neil) two weekends ago. On the way in, we stopped by in CFB Shilo for a quick tour. So many memories, and surprisingly most of the PMQs still standing (our last street - Halifax - completely gone, as were some others). Sad to see the PEHS site left untended, but the rest of the base is gorgeous due to the excellent maintenance and FABULOUS trees. Cottonwoods has grown so much in both development and foliage, we did not recognize the house we built there on the way in, had to double check on the way out!
#1 S-I-L finished his last ever course for reserves and headed out for a one week Brigade exercise this afternoon. We got a text/photo at dinner and he was being given his promotion to Major in front of his troops. We knew it would come, but a bit surprised it was just two weeks after being graduated from the course (there has to be a vacancy in the ranks, and it WAS open, so they wasted no time). We expect he will be appointed CO of the North Saskatchewan Regiment (oldest volunteer regiment in Canada) and get promoted to Lt. Col. at some point, and Capt...er MAJOR Clancy is now academically and by rank qualified. Problem is, the CO's appointment is usually a 5 year single term given to someone at the end of their working career - and brings one's reserve service to a dead end. Suspect he will get to serve a double term, as he just turned 33 and is very well liked and respected by his troops and superiors at Brigade (a genuine field officer - infantry - as well as decorated vet). Only option after would be to switch to reg forces and become General Staff, but I don't think he wants to do that. Time will tell.
We remember so well the words of the previous CO 10 1/2 years ago at the kids' (military) wedding on Brendan's return from Afganistan (youngest Canadian officer to serve there): "She will make a fine CO's wife one day". Well, that day is not far off, it seems.
The neat thing about kids getting married is you have another set of kids to brag about. And some grandkids now too.
Comments: Hy guys. I'm on Vancouver Island until October. I'm hoping those on the Island and anyone visiting might want to get together. Some time in September would work great for us as we're getting my girlfriends farm ready for sale and are quite busy. Having said that, if there are any Brats here or visiting, let me know and we should be able to meet for a beer/coffee/supper,,,My phone number is 403 861 3176
Comments: Hope all are having a great summer and be safe. Cheers Turk
