Lest We Forget: Good show to all the volunteer and the Legion members that brave the cold each year with the Poppy trays hanging on their chests tied by lanyards around their necks. .. .. My Dad has passed on now as has my Mum. Dad was a RCASC driver with many years out of Camp Shilo. My mum became a nurse by way of her WAC militia training in Halifax NS. They never missed a Remembrence Day Parade. They made sure I had Cadet training although I enlisted in RCAF as a career. My son served 7 years as a Air Cadet and aged out as a Warramt officer. He was very proud to command their honor guard among the rest of the Parade procession here locally every Nov.11.
My 'dad in law' served in RCAF during WW11 as a Wireless Air Gunner officer. The Kite (Halifax Bomber)was shot down coming back from a bomber raid over Germany and was able to bail out over Belgium. From there the underground army helped him back to the Allied Forces. He aquired a trick knee from squeezing himself thru the hatch on his way out of the kite. He still survives in very good health at age 92. That is my family. God love them. ....bump

Hi y'all.
On to ' Ol Hallowed Eve'. we kids knew as Halloween. I remember heading out after dark because Mum made us wait until dusk. It gave her the time to somehow magically find all the props, and the paint to suit us up in some sort of rag tag costume. when we left the house we thought we were the best outfit in the camp. Too funny. ... Today all the small boys are Star Wars and girls are Emma and Elsa. In the mid fifties we were all Gene Autry or Roy Rogers or Lone Ranger or Red Ryder and Little Beaver. I will leave it to a Shilo girl to reflect on how their costumes were put together. ... Off we went with the largest pillow case we could muster out. At the end of the evening a young man was measured by the gross weight and bulk of those white sacks.
More than one Camp Shilo Halloween evening was chilly and cold and often a rain cloud or maybe a snowfall. Other times that night turned out to be very clear with stars. One year as I made my way towards Kingston Ave. the sky started to fall and we all ducked for cover under porch roofs because it started to hail the size of golf balls. I still remember every year the vision of that night.
