WW1 started on June 28, 1914 and the guns fell silent on November 11, 1918. Five long bitter years. Military casualties in WW1 for Canada were 64,944...a lot of them dying for inept command and outdated tactics. We simply weren't prepared for an industrialized war.
WW2 began on Sep. 1, 1939 and it wasn't until Aug. 14, 1945 that hostilities ceased. In WW2 we fared better with a loss of 45,300 after seven years of brutal fighting.
The Korean War was fought from June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953....three short years, but none of them short enough for those serving. You can call it a "police action" if you want, but in my opion any time two groups of armed men shoot at each other with intent to kill, it's a war. In the Korean conflict we lost 1,558.

On Oct. 7, 2001 we sent yet again more young men to war in Afghanistan. To date we have lost 100 men in seven years. Not one of those who have died regrets their service to Canada....nor do those who yet live. Though the families of those killed while in service may not agree, we have gotten off very lightly in view of the above three mentioned conflicts. These men are there to bring stability, peace and education to a region where the inhabitants still live in a feudal tribal existance unchanged in the last 1000 years. Please don't let them feel like they have wasted their time, and support them in every way you can. Doing so lets them know they are appreciated and keeps them focused on the task at hand. The result is that we bring home the vast majority of those doing a tough and dirty job.

I MUST add my condolences to Jackie Findlay -- her husband Dave, really was a bright shining spirit --his laughter and his joie d'vivre was infectious. Jackie was always the "quiet stable anchor", loving, supportive and stable. Here's to you, Jackie, and to Dave.

I absolutely LUV "Shilobrats". It is SO heartwarming, and makes me "homesick"; I would love to see anybody from Shilo. (I married Tony Findlay and had the MOST BEAUTIFUL 3 children, --- Jim, Bob, and Dana. Subsequently have 6 of the most loved grandchildren in the world!!!) Any contact would be appreciated.!!

i am very sorry to hear of the passing of dave findlay. i will always remember dave usually swinging a 3, 5, or 7 iron out in front of the sgt's mess any time of the day or week. he was and always will remain a dear friend. from the dafoe family[ rod ,phyllis, lorraine and cheryl] our deepest sympathies are extended to jackie and the findlay families.
