ShiloBrats Guestbook

Comments:
Bill Brown and Av Beirnes have sent in photos of their mini-reunion in Edmonton, and are now posted in the Gallery.

With no major reunions in Shilo being planned, hopefully these small gatherings and one on one meetings will happen more often.

Remember to take photos, we want to see you too!

My wife and I just returned from a fabulous trip to Edmonton. My wife's cousin took us to Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise and the Ice Fields. What beautiful Mountains. We stayed with my wife's cousin Helen, she was the perfect hostess.

While there I got together with some Shilo Brats for dinner. With short notice, Laurena and Av were able to get a few together, they were: Av and Laurena Beirens,Laurena formally Robillard is a Shilo Brat as well, Dorland Lee and wife Lucy and Lionel Wilson and his wife Marin. It was great to see them all and we had a wonderful evening visiting and talking Shilo times.

Except for Lionel, who I saw at the 05 reunion, I had not seen the others in 42 years. I thought to myself, "boy have you guys aged lol." Then on a trip to the bathroom I took another look in the mirror and said to myself, "You have aged allot to you old fart lol."

I will send along some pictures for the web team to post.

A Shilo Brat Forever Bill Brown

Just a 'heads-up'here. Anyone interested in seeing a reunion of a bunch of Winnipeg bands that used to play frequently at the Teen Centre in Shilo? Google 60's Rock Reunion Winnipeg. Sept.26 I believe. Cheers ---Ray---

Hi Tim,

I was back in Shilo last month too. Another bike trip from Guelph (to spend some time with my daughter Ann who is with the RCMP in Manitou / Pilot Mound / Chrystal City) and spend some time at Salt Lake near Strathclair. Too bad we didn't bump into each other. I added a couple of pictures to the Gallery from the latest trip (and just added a few more just now including the sign that you were referring to out beyond Sapper Avenue ... these ones were taken 2 years ago when I was out there). I know what you mean about how the base has changed so much. I see that PEHS is still standing (sort of). I'll be back again in October (duck hunting this time), and can't wait. There's no better place better than Manitoba in the Fall!

Just dropped into Shilo a couple of weeks ago for a visit en route to Ontario....was dismayed to find that since my last visit (about 10 years ago) all the H-huts have disappeared. This pretty much completes my disorientation when I go there. I think I recognized the old open field (with the copse of aspens at the end) that was our "playground" when D-5 was an elementary school in the early '60's, but practically nothing else is familiar. I wanted to take my 19-year-old son to the Artillery Museum, and couldn't find it---I eventually found the new building. The old Air O.P. airfield appears to be long gone (I think the highway runs right thru it),the water tower that the meatheads came and made me climb down from is gone.

Does anyone know what became of the cairn dedicated to Capt. Ross Flewin that was at the airfield which was named after him?

I walked out behind 11 Sapper Avenue, where there used to be nothing between me and the Assiniboine, and there is a big sign introducing all the plants I grew up with --spear grass, sage, brown-eyed susans, and ground juniper--as components of the "threatened mixed-grass prairie biome". Now it's all irrigated potatoes, corn, and sunflowers.

I grabbed a handful of sage and put it on my dashboard as I headed for Ontario, where it stayed for a few days, the smell reminding me of the smell of summer when I was a boy.

Further to the last post, aircraft were flown to an area close to the border and parked. At night the Canadian troops moved across the border and "stole" the aircraft while American officials deliberately looked the other way. Indeed, in all probability they co-operated with Canada in the "theft" of these aircraft which were often loaded with spare parts rather than bombs. The aircraft were then towed to a point near Morris and dispersed from there.

This answer to Janet Walis. The answer to your question is no. Shilo was and is an army base. Entire aircraft were rolled across the border by hand at night since there was no lend lease agreement and the US wanted to appear neutral. These aircraft were then flown to various bases in Canada with a lot of them being ferried out through Edmonton, Alberta. These were then transported to bases in Alaska and the UK. Surprisingly, a lot of the ferry pilots were women.

Thanks to Faye and another whirwind trip to Shilo, we have added over 100 new house photos to the Gallery. The information with them may never be perfect or complete, but please contact us about any inaccuracies or additions (brothers & sisters, dates, etc.) that we can make.

Also if you have any photos from around your house when you lived there or revisited, please send them to the ShiloBrats Gallery email listed in What's New. When there are multiple photos over time from any address, you will notice a light blue frame around the cover photo and it will say Album in the title. Click on the photo to open the album. Where did you live? has had tremendous response so far, please keep it up!

For the history buffs, here is an inquiry sent to ShiloBrats by way of the Contact form from janet wallis guetschow:

Question or Comment: Is anyone familiar with the RAF Ferry Command - WWII? Bringing airplanes to Britian at the very start of the war. Did Shilo play any part in the moving of the plane parts across the US border by farmers to the CPR tracks? The parts came from California, crossing the border in North Dakota. Thanks for any information. jg
