Dr.J, I'd like to point out that although JPG format allows for maximum file compression, it is a LOSSY file type. This means that each time you open or manipulate the image it loses pixels until you are left with an image that is next to unreadable. The internet recognizes both GIF and BMP files, both of which are LOSSLESS file types. My suggestion is that contributors save raw camera images as BMP's. Save that and make a copy as a JPG for sharing.

Thank you Ida for contacting me with your Gallery problem, and it may also be the same situation others have run into for adding photos to the Gallery. There have been a number of registrations to the Gallery in the last year, with no photos added to the album created.. Registration to the Gallery is only necessary to add photos, and automatically creates an album in the Gallery at the end. It will show up as a blank blue box with the copy ‘no thumbnail’ untill you add photos. After photos are added, the album is moved to the front for all to see there is a new album.

Ida began adding photos but ran into a problem and contacted me (I ain’t called Doc for nothin’) My instructions didn’t work so she emailed her photos to me. The problem I discovered is with the newer digital cameras. Now that they are commonly around 10 mega pixels, their picture files are huge (which is ideal for making print enlargements) but not for web sites. An ideal pixel count for a web photo is around 600 to 800 pixels in either direction, the new cameras now produce pixel counts of around 2500 to 3500 pixels in either direction. Reducing the pixel count for a web photo does not reduce the quality of the photo to the viewer.

Most photo editing programs will allow you to change the pixel count of a photo to suit the application for it. The one I use is a freeware program called FastStone Image Viewer, free download from CNET Download.com. Feel free to post your suggestions for this. Also some of Ida’s photos were thumbnail size bitmap images. Jpeg is the file format most digital cameras and web sites use, or if you scan old photos ’Save as’ a Jpeg file. The Gallery is fairly easy to use when you follow the guidelines, and if you run into a problem, or don’t feel confident about your computer savvy, contact me (Contact form) or send in your photos to be added (Gallery Album email in What’s New)

Just dropping in to say 'hello'. I'm still here in Guinea and don't have much opportunity to get on-line so I enjoy catching up with Shilobrats when I have the chance. wonderful for you to have had the mini reunion in Edmonton Bill and I loved the photos you brought back. thank-you.
If anyone's interested to see some of my pics from Guinea just google 'Africa without commentary' and you should find my blogspot. I'll check in next time I'm in Conakry.

I have been waiting for this - always makes me smile. Til next year then.

I was telling my wife about the telegraph we made and strung across the road - my house to yours - Do you remember?
