I wonder if any of the gals remember my younger sisters Gail and Roseane. My younger brothers Larry, Guy, and Clay never left me alone. A they tagged along everywhere with me if they could walk or run fast enough. Eight boys and two girls we were. ..Two are gone now. I am out West and they all back East. They only hang out with each other. They are very very close. God help the so and so that would ever try to come between them. The boys are 'the fighting Murphy's'. My sisters could hold their own. Comments: Karen, I enjoyed your Life Was Calling story. You moved to The Maples in 1978 and I moved to neighbouring Tyndall Park in 1977. We probably walked past each other shopping at the Garden City mall. You asked about my sister Brenda. I'm sorry to say she passed away in 2010 after a long battle with cancer. You have a very eclectic taste in music, judging by your bucket list. I highly recommend you move the Stones to the top of list. For old geezers, they still put on a heck of a show.
Comments: First of all - I'm so happy to see all of these interesting posts. This is the kind of dialogue that Dave "Otter" Mulligan envisioned when he started this site 12 or 13 years ago - reuniting people and digging up and sharing old memories. Secondly - Sheila (Love) Rodgers - how did we miss seeing each other at BMHC so many years ago? I worked in the same building where the lab was (both in records office and in the infirmaries), and I brought lots of lovely specimens (yeccchh!!) over to the lab as a student and grunt nurse. I also remember Pat Barker and Cathy Derbyshire taking their Psych. Nursing courses in the class ahead of me. BUMP - you are really cooking with gas, and I sure enjoy reading all you little anecdotes. I'm glad you remembered the Tuttle name (I got stuck on that Turner name), because Cheryl Tuttle was in the same class as me, and I think her brother (Fred) was a bit older. I'm going to throw three other names at you, and see what you come up with. #1 the Titus family. They lived at the other end of Ubique. I visited their mother (Hazel) in Portage a couple of summers ago. Think Brian and Nancy. #2 the Scott family. When we lived at 2 Stonehenge, they lived at 4 Stonehenge. Another Brian here. #3 Tanis Brown lived near the Titus family. I had lunch with her a year ago and we still correspond regularly. Maybe you will remember me from my maiden name (Middleton). It's interesting that you're so candid about the subject of "alcohol" at Shilo. I remember the Provost cruising around every Friday night when the Sergeants Mess emptied out after "Happy Hour". Lastly, I can't help but think about Doug He would have been over the moon reading the last couple of pages. Greetings to all.

Comments: Thanx Faye, No it was not Finlays. .Funny. I now remember that as a family and leaving Shilo. Our PMQ was vacated nut Dad was still not cleared off Base. We the the three older boys stayed over with the Finlays for two nights before we left for Nova Scotia. We grew up with the Finlays until we left. Same as the Henneseys family. My mum and dad were, good friends with them. I recall that now. ...No. There was a family also with boys that we went to school with and hung out on the street each day. They were on other side of us on Ubique. About three houses near end . Close to Kimgston. ...Darn. They were at least three boys all our ages. The Dad was an alcoholic. .......That being said, my own dad was a drinker also. .....Amyway we spent a lot of time together. All of us. U.S. and them and Henneseys and Finlays. Evoy was there. Now another name comes to mind. Tuttle. I remember Tuttles. The name. ..I am pretty.sure we were there for around ten or eleven years. ...Our first PMQ was an H hut. You know. Four families sharing a communal washroom and kitchen. ...Then we got a PMQ across camp from Ubique. When I was in nursery school. It was new. Very small. Heated by coal. Funny. We had bread delivered by horse, cart, from the local economy. Same as milk and butter. Right to the door. My brain is foggy about ice boxes or a refrigerator. ....In PMQ I think we had most of,the amenities. For the modern day. Believe,me a I have a photographic memory for those things but at 67 years I am fading a bit. Names do not come to me as easy. My mum,was very good friends in a coffe clitch with neighbours across the back yard from us. Stonehenge. ...I would walk passed their house each day thru their drive to go to school or the school playground or the Ball diamonds. Or cut across the diamonds in a short cut to the PMQ' s over, there where I had friends. The boys will remember that we all had quite a lot of fun saving and trading comic books. The heavier 25 cent ones were so coveted. Chuckle. We played hours of ' Marble games ' in he dirt. ....I attended one school just behind us from Ubique. Then another sort of across the street from it. More south. ...I remember winning at recess in a marble contest, and all we talked about was about Perry Como show on the TV the night before. Funny memories. ....I remember spending lots of time at Shilo Dump. We found lots of good stuff out there. My mom was not happy when I once brung home a near new chemistry set. Now I seem to remember that Floyd a turner may have had a younger brother named Glenn. More later.

Comments: Bump, could it have been the Findlays the fairly large family you were talking about on Ubique? If not, go back to the Shilobrats page and scroll (on left) to Where Did You Live. then click on Ubique and you might find them.
Comments: I just read Karen's bio with great interest. I'm surprised our paths didn't cross along the way as I too worked at Brandon Mental Hospital and Portage School only in the lab and x-ray departments. It is fun to see where life has taken some of the "brats" over all these years.

Comments: Yes Floyd. Your Mum has a fine memory. Ernie was my older brother by a year. Chuckle. He was a 'character'. The subject of an interesting story himself. He lost his life at sea off the West Coast of Vancouver Island in 1986. He was born in 1947. Again you got it right. Now I remember the Hennesseys on Royal. Gosh who the duece were the family across from me and down your way on Ubique. The family was there the whole time we were. There were three boys same age as Me and Ernie and my younger brother Larry. I think a girl or two as well. The polite way to say it is that the Parents were battle royal. We were good friends with the boys. If I think long enough the names will come. I dunno. ...I can never remember being called anything but Bump. Matter of fact my brother Larry was quite angry at me after RCAF when I began to be called Willy. Memories are funny toys. .... Remember Barney's Drive Inn outside Brandon. ...The movie Drive Inn as well. ......The ' Man With The Axe' five and dime store. Lightning and Thunder over the Ball Diamonds. Hmmmmnnnnnm I will never miss those darned old DDT fogger machines that moved up and down our street to fend off the flies and Mosquitos. Grass hoppers and Gophers. .....Say. Do you recal at all at Army Xmas parties we got fantastic gifts from Santa. I still have my Red Ryder 1000 shot BB. gun Carbine Winchester 74 rifle that I had got as a gift. The wooden * * * was co-signed in the wood by Tex Ritter who in that current time frame was on the Tellie. Also have a Ford overhead cab dump truck made from the new thing at the time which was 'plastic'. I will not part with either. The Red Ryder is a collector item now of course. Also still own a Lonestar Cap gun and holster set I was given at Xmas from Parents. We all had them back then. ...My mothers estate which my sister looks after has most paper keepsakes. One or more has my Shilo, school report cards. Remember they were like a fold out card. The cover was the Bison and crossed Swords and the Maple Leafs. More later. Karen: Yes. Sometimes all it takes is a little spark to ignite the fire and the memories begin to burn at the pages. More Later.
Comments: Don McCutcheon, Bump Murphy and Floyd Turner - "You never forget the neighborhood kids you grew up with." - (author unknown). Don - It's hard to believe the Shilo High School has been closed for nearly 30 years. What's even harder to believe is that I left Shilo after Grade 12 FIFTY years ago!. That makes Bump, Floyd and I "baby-boomers" and you a "Generation X-er". I hope you go forward with your plan to start organizing a reunion for 2017. (If I'm still alive, I would come). I've been to three reunions and it's the most fun to see how the goof-balls that you played with grew up turned out to be responsible successful adults with grandchildren of their own. Floyd - how wonderful that your mother is still alive. My mother lived next door to your sister, Brenda, and they were friendly and had a daily coffee-klatch for a few years. So I wonder how Brenda is doing. Bump - while I don't remember you specifically, I remember the Murphy name, which is not an uncommon name. I am glad that you and Floyd renewed your friendship online, and if you click through the Shilobrat website you will find names of lots of other brats you probably knew. As you have so many memories and could write a book about living in Shilo, maybe you would consider putting together a few pages about how your own life story played out and submitting it to the Shilobrats editor to be published with the dozen or so other life stories in the Special Edition section. (Floyd - you, too). Mostly, I'm very happy to see all the recent traffic on this site. That little devil "D" (who passed away suddenly three weeks ago) would have been so happy to see all of these entries. He was passionate about this site, and was concerned that it would fade away because of Facebook and Twitter and such-like. Shilobrats was the first forum designed just for the unique people who live in army camps. So please, in memory of Doug, keep up with the dialogue. Thanks, and have a nice day.

Comments: Bump, I called my Mom to ask her if she remembered your family. She does and said she thought I played with an Ernie Murphy. My Mom has a terrific memory for 96 years old but she doesn't remember anyone named Bump. The Hennessey family lived on Royal Avenue so they aren't the family you remember living across from you. I lived in Shilo from 1951 to 1967, so I saw a lot of people come and go, sometimes, more than once. I get confused when I try to put a date on when I knew some of the "kids". The Findlays and Hennesseys were long-timers, too, so they stand out. I'll send you an email.
