ShiloBrats Guestbook

Comments:
Whether annoyed or encouraged by his postings to use the Guestbook more, (D) Doug Jenkins will now leave that task to others, Sadly Doug suffered a major stroke last week, and passed away peacefully Saturday night, June 27.

There was a suggestion by Karen Pollock, and reiterated by Doug, to transfer some Facebook postings to the Guestbook that are of interest to Shilobrats, whether on FB or not. That has been done on occasion, and can certainly be done more to increase activity and interest in the Guestbook. This can also be done by any of us. If you see something on Facebook of interest to any Shilobrats, copy it and post in the Guestbook. The Guestbook will not accept links or web addresses as a guard against spam, so if your post is not successful, check that it does not include names of web sites.

Many of us remember when checking the Guestbook was something you did every day (like your FB page) because every day there was something new. That's all Doug was trying to restore, and many of us would like to see again. If we all jump in with something from time to time, we can bring that activity and interest back in the Guestbook....or there will be the (D) to pay :!devil: :!devil: :!devil:

Our family moved from Esquimalt BC (Work Point Barracks PMQ's) to Shilo in 1951-52. My brother and I went to Princess Elizabeth school I was in grade 3 and my brother was in grade 4. We then moved back to Esquimalt after only a year at Shilo. Our family lived a #17 Esquimalt crescent. My name is John McKay, my older brother is Wally and my mom Emily and dad Gordon. My dad was in the Dental Corp - RCDC. My parents are long gone, I will be 72 this year and my brother Wally 73. My brother is travelling across Canada with his wife and he phoned me today, June 20 2015, from Brandon to ask me where we lived in Shilo, I remember all that stuff but he doesn't, so I told him and he said he was going to go there and see the old house. I remember the parachute jump tower, it was across a field from out backyard. I remember back then you could walk to the edge or end of town and see nothing but prairie flat land forever. I recall wind / sand storms with the tumbling tumbleweeds and we would get sand between the storm windows and our inside windows. Every kid had a skating rink in their backyard, dad turned the hose on in the winter and the next day the skating rink was ready. Great memories for only a year there when I was 8 years old.

The gallery shows a lovely picture of Brian Howie, and one of his pals from 50 years ago. Ken Jenkins, you should have been in that picture. Anyone would have taken it for you. You and Brian were friends and played together. We are missing you from the shot.

There are four people I think of as influences in my life. Leonardo da Vinci, Frank Lloyd Wright, Walt Disney and Brian Howie, who was all those rolled up in one, and he was there first to set that high standard of appreciation for me to be influenced by the others. I didn't get to go to their memorial service, but yesterday I had the privilege of attending the one for Brian Howie, not to mourn his passing, but to celebrate his life, an appreciation for how his life continues, extended through others that he influenced.

It wasn't officially a Shilobrat mini-reunion, but 50 years ago, everyone in this group were together at various Shilo activities, myself, Bruce Howie, Doug & Don Jordan, Keith & Judy Hummel, Mel Rioux, Gloria Johnson, Gill Willerton, now one more time, and yes, Brian was also there!, his spirit will never fade.

Check the Gallery for the latest collection of antique Shilobrats and comment here in the Guestbook what you remember about any of them.
