So glad I found this website. 67 yo Army Brat here. Dad was in the Signal Corps all his life. He died in 1964 at age 40. In the mid to late 50s we lived in Brandon, Camp Shilo and Winnipeg. I am trying to piece together the order of moves, but I think we were in Winnipeg for Gr5 1958-59 and Gr6 1959-60 school years. I think I was probably in Brandon for a short bit waiting to get into PMQ in Shilo so we were probably in Camp Shilo Gr4 1957-8 and perhaps Gr3 1956-7

My wife and I drove across Canada in 2010 and it turned into me retracing my Army Brat years. I happily found the two places in Winnipeg that I lived including the PMQ @ Fort Osborne Barracks.

When we came to Shilo the sand made it seem so familiar. I kept driving around the building that ended up being Princess Elizabeth School because the exit doors from each classroom seemed so famailiar. The memory of sneaking back into the classroom through those doors while there was a party going on outside, on the last day of school, my friend Doug and I went to the teachers desk to open the drawer to look at the strap that lay in there. Ha kids.

Thanks so much for having this website. I will enjoy looking around. I have no clear memory of what street we lived on there, it seems every military base loves to name it's streets after Canadian War battles :)

Many regards
Bill.

Bill G. Your description of Brian is perfect and moving. I wrote about Brian in my blog. I can't enter a URL address here and there is not enough space to reproduce the entry. If you want to read it and don't know the address of my blog, email me.

Here is the start of the blog entry...

Brian was one of the most creative persons I knew, with a golden sense of humor. He could make me laugh anytime, anywhere. Like the day we were in the swimming pool and passed the high diving board which bore a sign "Out of Bounds"

"Shouldn't that sign read "Out of Bounce?" Brian said matter-of-factly. His dry sense of humor could reach genius level.......

los off

Very sorry to hear of Brian's passing. Sincere condolences to his family, and to our dear friend Bruce.

I did not know Brian well, but in addition to remembering his gift of musical and artistic talent that he shared and inspired us, I clearly remember what a quiet, kind and gentle person he was.

Brian provided the inspiration for everything that's happened in my life, so sad he has moved on, but his inspiration and his songs will live on...he touched a lot of people that way, knowing him has been a blessing.

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Brian Howie this morning. He and the band The Saints provided hours of entertainment to Shilo Brats. Condolences to his family and Bruce and his family. He had been sick for quite some time so at least now he is in a better place

For those 60's Shilobrats not on Facebook, and also for those who are, the following message was posted today in the Facebook Group 'Obits of Shilobrats'

It is with great sadness that we find that "Brian Howie peacefully passed away this afternoon in Richmond General Hospital with his wife and daughters and me at his bedside."
This message from his brother Bruce Howie.

Brian Howie, a ShiloBornBrat, inspired a generation of Shilobrats towards music and the arts. As a tribute to his memory, what are your memories of Brian.

Heading to Brandon on Wednesday to see my mom and do some taxes. My brother Wayne is coming in too, but too bad we won't be there long enough to plan a visit among Shilobrats!! But we'll be thinking of you all. :!kiss:
