This Remembrance Day will be particularly memorable this year as our father, Ben Ripley, passed away last week on Nov.5th at age 87 at Truro, Nova Scotia. Dad had two postings to Shilo, 1952-54 when he was with Service Corps and 1968-72 when he was with RCEME and posted to Shilo to be with 1 Drone Troop. After Drone Troop disbanded he was attached to RCHA until his last posting to Chatham, NB. Greetings to all our Shilobrats family.

My father lied about his age to join the war effort at fifteen, spent his 16th birthday on the boat to Europe, returned after the war at the age of 21. Lost youth! hopefully paid back by his children, Ken Doug & Deb.

To commemorate this Remembrance Day 2013, Edie posted her "Tribute to my Mother" link on the ShiloBrats Facebook page.

For those not on Facebook, you can view her tribute in the 'Special Edition' section on the side menu.

Many of us have a personal connection to Remembrance Day through our heritage that will become more distant over time. Here is now a place and time to 'Remember' your connection before it becomes too distant...

Looking for Cadet Fred Tuttle who lived at Shilo when his father was posted there in 1963. I believe that he was in an artillery sponsored cadet corps.
I was one of the 25 cadets, along with Fred, that went to Jamaica in 1963.

Thank you Gary for highlighting a very unheralded era for the "Moms" who served in our Armed Forces as we lead up to 'Remembrance Day'. Edie's story can be viewed in Special Editions in the side menu. Do you have a story to tell?

Just read your amazing tribute to your Mom and her service to the nation. I am truly moved by her story because, like you, I really didnt see my own Mother as having a life before "being Mom" She too served for 3 years in the CWAC. Of course, we have pictures of Mom in uniform and dozens of faces we didnt know anything about. It saddens me that I didnt realize sooner, the depth of her contribution to this Canada we call home. Thank you for reminding me and Thank You to your MOM and the other 22,000 young women who came to the defence of freedom.

I was back in Brandon Manitoba for 10 days in October. What a great time I had, even though I was there to visit my dad in the hospital. Got to see an old pal Lois Forke, Dianne Gray Moorehead, Alf Hackenschmidt, Heather Dalgleish and former shilobrat teacher and choir master, Gerald Brown.
Too bad I didn't have a chance to see many other brats who I think about regularly. :!hi:
