OMG! What a great discovery this site is. I spent from 1960-1965 living in Shilo from age 5 through 9. Some of you will likely remember my older brother Bruce who was 14 through 18, or perhaps even my older sister Wendy who was 8 through 12. We lived at 3 Royal Ave

Being as young as I was, I am amazed at how clear my memories are. Many of the names on this site are ones I remember as my brother's friends like Doug Jordan, Ron Darling and the Howies.

Being so young at the time I don't have any yearbooks to go through but names like Joanne Peterson, Maxwell Clark, Gary Anns, Leona Roach, Carol Orton, Mark Beattie, Barbara and Diane Parnham were people I knew on a more direct basis. Max did have a couple of older brothers, Stewart and I think Ron. Max's father came to teach phys. ed.

While Bruce attended P.E.H.S., I started kindergarten at O'Kelly then did grade 1 at the back of Princess Elizabeth, grade 2 back at O'Kelly, grade 3 we took a brown army bus from the parking lot of P.E. to the other side of camp where an old H building was converted to a school, then back to O'Kelly for grade 4 with Mrs. Bohonas. My older sister got to attend the new Greenwood school. (I think it was called Greenwood)

I can remember when the cost of the matinee show at Strange Hall on Saturday went from 15 cents to 25 cents, cutting in on funds slated for popcorn and a drink. How tramatic.. inflation hits a seven year old! However at the end of the show if you were quick and grabbed one of the brooms they handed out, to help sweep up, you would get a free pass to the next week's show. Snacks restored and all was right with the world again.

During "Fire Prevention" week, besides the parade, a plane would fly overhead each day just after school let out and they would alternatively drop: leaflets, balloons with a coupon inside, and miniature parachutes. You could turn the balloon coupon or little parachutes in at the firehall in exchange for a Silver Dollar. I actually caught one of the parachutes. To a kid, who the @#$! is interested in a Silver Dollar when you have a cool little parachute to play with.

Going out to watch the "Honest John", building little dams out by a culvet, spear grass, cub scouts and cub summer camp--Camp Kipacheewin, the variety show where Bruce played the piano for a couple of numbers, the variety store in the new mini mall with the cool display of "Dinky Toys", the discoloured brownish water when one of the two water towers got down near the botton, the display of lizards -- snakes etc. at O'Kelly,... and on and on.

So Hi to all of you fellow Shilobrats!

Throwing in my penny's worth in support of comments by Ken,Theresa,Judy,Faye,Allan,Doug et al:

Until about a year and a half ago, when Judy Rioux called me out of the blue and made me aware of Otter's work and the '05 Reunion, I had spent the previous 39 years with some fading but cherished childhood memories of people & events from the Shilo years, with the exception of a couple of brief reunions with Jim & Paul Stewart over the years.

Since Judy's call, the re-kindling of some very old friendships and the sheer pleasure of sharing memories of childhoods spent in a special place in a long past era has added a positive dimension to my life that was previously absent.

Here's to keeping that dimension alive & flourishing by the passing of Otter's torch to new capable hands!

I do hope that someone will come forward and continue this marvelous tool. Ken was so right that David (Otter) has done way more than his share to make this site available to us. There have been so many of us who have reconnected with old friends and even family. I had the wonderful experience of meeting with Diane (Otter's sister) last Thursday. It was so amazing. We hadn't seen each other for 40 years. In no time at all we were tripping down our teen years. David received an insight into his sister's life which he never knew existed. It was all too wonderful and too short. But now that we have reconnected I know that we will make the effort to keep it that way.
So any of you computer geeks out there who can take this on for a time please step up, we really need you.

Otter:
"This is our place...for us alone...for no one else shares such a unique experience as we do. Shilo is a microcosm that no one can understand if they had not lived there."

With these words ShiloBrats.com was born

Otter:
"You must remember though that you cannot relax and hope others will do the work. You need to contribute your memories in pictures and words. Just as important is that you continue to make sure that everyone you know from Shilo hears about this site."

And it grew...to this remarkable memory lane we visit with tears and joy.

Otter - June 29 / 2006
"It is with profound sorrow and deep regret that I must announce my departure from Shilobrats as it's webmaster and administrator. As of 01 July 06 my tenure with the site will cease. Unless the site is taken over by other management, it will cease to exist at all in May of 2007."

Fortunately, Otter has been working in the background helping to guide a concerned group of Shilobrats on the tasks required to keep the site going and growing.

This is his creation, but it is our legacy and our responsibility to be part of that continuation.

Doug Jordan will soon post a newsletter on his website outlining the site group and the tasks to be managed for the continuation of the ShiloBrats web site. There will be an announcement in the Guestbook.

A new address has been established for contributing your photos and memories for now.
Please e-mail to Edith Walker at edie007@nb.sympatico.ca

And Otter...sleep well tonight!

A group is trying to discern interest in a Sixtie's only reunion in 2008. If you are a relic from the 60's in Shilo, take the new mini poll.

Hail to Chief Otterkins! I know you know how much we appreciate your launching "our site", and Ken Jenkins couldn't have put the words better when he reminded us Otterkins does have another life, one which I'm sure he's been neglecting over the years keeping this site going! Otterkins, WE LOVE YOU, WE RESPECT YOU and we respect your decision to "retire". And, above all else, we know how to get hold of you. Take care of yourself, and keep in touch!
