Thanks for the story, Neil. I was too young to have Mr. Chastko as a teacher. It sounds like he was an excellent and caring teacher.

Memories, Memories! I will always remember Mr. Chastco. Actually I really do have a special place in my heart for this man.
You see, when I was 14 years old, the 'powers that be' at PEHS determined that I was 'learning disabled, so I was shunted off to the only alternative available in Shilo at the time. O.E.C.! Those 'learned people' convinced my folks that this way I could be 'better trained' to at least become 'self sufficient'. We in O.E.C. were pretty much thought of as 'the bottom of the barrel'!
I was put in Mr. Chastco's grade 9 class. It is true that I did not understand much of what was being taught, the way it was being taught. Mr. Chastco recognized this as my problem and set out to teach me the same lessons but in a different way. We found one that worked. We started this 'new way' in November and by the end of the school year I got much higher marks on my exams than anyone would have thought possible. I still don't know what 'pi' are! But I got 84 on my final math test. HE CHEATED! They said. Well, I rewrote the exams with Mr. Clark in attendance and came up with 81% in math. That was my 'final'mark. All the other marks were of a passing grade tho not as high.
I moved to Grande Prairie, Ab for Grade 10. REGULAR high school! By November of that year I was sooo bored with the math lessons that I started doing them in ROMAN NUMERALS. My teacher got so fed-up with my attitude that at the beginning of each class I was given only the first 4 questions of the lesson quiz and if I got them all right (and I did)I was excused from the rest of that class. That is how I did my grade 10 and 11. To this day I still play with Roman Numerals and don't trust calculaters! Mathematics is a very important part of my life today. This I attribute directly to Mr Chastco. This man took the time to care, and I will be forever grateful to his memory.
I did not learn of Mr. Chastco's passing until I went to one of the PEHS reunions. I wanted to introduce my wife to Mr. Chastco. Instead I went out to my car and had a good cry. There will never be another 'Mr. Chastco'!

Gosh, haven't thought of the Chastko's in years! Mrs. Chastko was my french teacher at Greenwood, then she took over for Mrs. Thompson in fifth grade when Mrs. Thompson had her baby (mid 70's). I remember Mr. Chastko passed away near that time in a very tragic accident...a very sad time for the family. If anyone ever hears from them, I'd love to get in touch with Mrs. Chastko.
