Comments: A minor quibble about the chronology of PEPS/PEHS as described in the Gallery section--it says that it was renamed PEHS in 1961. I moved to Shilo for the second time in August of 1961, and started Grade 1 in Esther Bott's class at PEPS in 1961. My brother David started kindergarten the same year at O'Kelly. Greenwood school was not built until a year or so after that, and I believe it opened in the fall of 1963. I remember riding my bike around on the brand-new silky-smooth asphalt on the parking lot that summer, while the interior finishing was still under way. So I think that the PEPS to PEHS took place in fall 1962--at least, I spent grade 2 and 3 in an H-hut called D-5, and there was another converted H-hut, (A-2, I believe)that also served as overflow classroom space. I think we were the peak of the baby boom. They schlepped us by bus to PEHS for gym (with Mr. Emond) and to O'Kelly for music (with Miss Page)in 1962-63, and to Greenwood for both in 1963-64.
On the subject of German tanks--I don't have the esoteric knowledge of German armour that some of you older brats have, but I do remember at least one tank which I believed was WWII German vintage, and at least in my mind's eye it was in grey paint with those square black crosses. I think it was over by where the headquarters building was, and on more than one occasion my friend Jack Williams and I, or my brother and I, got up early in the morning and crawled underneath it and up through an open hatch on the belly. I just remember it being dark and greasy inside, but I didn't see any hands.

Comments: As all of you will understand, at our age, there isn't that much in big news personally, so we live our lives vicariously through our kids - or so it would seem. This past month, our eledest and our son-in-law have been busily working to put together the ceremony and celebrations for the changing of the colours of the North Saskatcehwan Regiment. This reserve unit goes back to 1882(?) and the first battle honour on their colours is Duck Lake putting down the Riel Rebellion in 1885. Brendan is the senior colour officer (and regimental hisorian), so this was quite a big deal for him. Johanna takes her role as a military wife very seriously and is deeply involved in the social side of supporting families of deployed troops and planning events. Attending the ceremony as Old Guard was a WO2 who also attended in 1941 when Queen Elizabeth I and 1975 when Gov.Gen Leger presented new colours to this storied and historic regiment. Alexia and I were so proud, but also so sad that our fathers are not here to see this happening and the traditions and values of service they held so dear live on.
Got to give equal billing to kid #2 (you know how that works). Baby Meghan is off today for the summer in Uganda with Global Vets. They will be working with a gorilla project in Queen Elizabeth Park and later a lion project in Bwindi National Park while providing support (treamtments, advice and surgeries) to domestic animals of the local populace. Kind of like Medecins Sans Frontiers, but for animals. She will go on to India and then return through Europe for a bit of a holiday before coming back to school.

Comments: For sure Terry. I can think of a number of shilobrats that will join us. Yahoo.! Stay tuned next week for another guestbook message, but for now, anyone who needs a hotel might consider the Comfort Inn on Hwy#1 in Brandon.
Comments: Otter, I do recall the incident, it was the skeleton of a hand I believe -can't pin down the date exactly - but I do remember it being reported in the Stag.

Comments: I do not recall any incident involving a hand. Actually, looking back through my photos both of these variants are Mk. III's which makes them even rarer. If a hand was found in one of them, it was nearly dust considering the age....or relatively new. Which is it I wonder?

Comments: Otter, do you remember which of those German tanks they found a hand in? I think it was around 1965 - 66. I have it in my mind that it was a very early model tank.

Comments: Bernie, your memories of Shilo are incorrect. The only vintage WW2 German tanks there were a Sturmgeshutze Mk. IV and an L70 Mk. IV "Lang". Both are early versions and extremely rare. I do hope they are trying to restore them to a proper historical condition. There was never a Panther there. I would have wet my pants if that was the case. Just inside the gates was a 155mm artilery piece and a smaller gun I think was a 75mm. They've never had an 88 on display there.
In Gunnery Park on Royal Ave. were (initialy) two late model Grizzlys, but once the Germans moved in these were both replaced with Leopard A1A2's and outside the Officer's Mess they placed a modern Sturm "Kannone". What has happened to these I'm not sure, but I certainly hope all of them recieve the respect and care that is due them.
