To add to the confusion of the last few posts, I am making my first post since January of 2002. We lived in Shilo from 1955-1965, and it seems to me that before O'Kelly School was opened, the proposed name for it was to be Princess Anne Public School (P.A.P.S.). This information was apparently submitted to the Queen, who objected to having buildings named after her children at that time, hence the name change. I also remember all of the students assembling outside for the official opening and the camera crew from CKX-TV filming the event for the news that night. There was also a grainy picture published in the Brandon Sun. Does anyone else have this recollection?

I read your comments each day regarding PEPS and PEHS. It was an interesting time and it took quite a while to bring the name change about.

I was principal of Greenwood when it opened and remained there until Ed Emond retired. I took over and retired in 1987.By then the high school students were bussed into Brandon and most of the teachers were hired by the Brandon division. It was not a happy time during the years when this change was dictated by the Powers in Ottawa.
I recall meetings of parents and teachers protesting that the welfare of the students was not being considered but it was a matter of $.
I have a flock of old pictures that I am going to send. Some go back to 1950. There are a lot from Greenwood. Those operettas that we used to have were a real blast.Keep your memories flowing they keep my old heart ticking even though it`s lost a lot of power.

Regarding the Greenwood School opening, there is an official confirmation from Mr. Gerald Brown, a Greenwood teacher at the time. THE OFFICIAL GREENWOOD SCHOOL OPENING was at 2:00 p.m. on October 30, 1963.

I must have been playing in that concrete wading pool in 61, nice going Tim

There are PEHS trophies in the Shilo museum, if a local brat would take the time to look them up. A search may be required they were stored away in boxes
and they dug them out for our last reunion in 05

Doug's Awards table photo and Stag articles have been added to the Great School Debate Album in the Gallery along with some comments and theories, and until the actual verification of details come forward, this should be fun! What are your memories...

I have a photo, developed in September, 1963, showing the awards table for awards night decorated with a pennant entitled "P.E.H.S.". But, I have a newspaper article from 1964 in which the school is referred to a "P.E.P. School". You know, just to add to the confusion. However, I am pretty sure I graduated from P.E.H.S. in 1964!

Just dug out my report cards and diplomas from 1961 to 1964. No help there. None of them says either Princess Elizabeth Public School OR Princess Elizabeth High School--the ones from 61-62 and 62-63 say "Princess Elizabeth School", (even though I was at D-5 in 62-63--maybe it was considered a "satellite campus"and the one from 63-64 has D5 written in by hand. As for Greenwood--I am VERY sure it was not there in 1961--there was a concrete wading pool in the open field where the school was subsequently built. Olga Yumatoff (I think that was her name) took me and my brother there to cool off when she was babysitting us in the summer.

Thanks guys, although no firm date has appeared in print (that we can find) for the PEPS/PEHS change of name, it was used based on the following information.

The 1962 Yearbook is for the 61 - 62 school year. Throughout the entire yearbook all references are made as PEHS including in the Introduction: ’We hope that you will enjoy this publication and use it to remember the first year of Princess Elizabeth High School in the years to come.’

The Sports pages in the 62 Yearbook refer to all sports as PEHS, but the men’s uniforms were PEPS till 1965 when they changed to plain or numbered tops, the ladies carried the PEPS name all the way to 1969.

And in February of 09, we received this from our Contact Us form.
Name: David Klenavic
Question or Comment: I enjoyed viewing your site. I was president of the student council in 1961-62. It was through our councils efforts the name of the school was changed from P.E.P.S. to P.E.H.S. we also approved the first high school jacket green and gold if I remember right. There does not seem to be many photos from that period, we were just getting started. I left Shilo in 62.

So putting this together, it looks like the ‘61 school year started out as PEPS, and by the efforts of the Student Council (and before the Yearbook was published) changed to PEHS. As the year started out as PEPS, the school still accommodated other grades, and was not exclusively a high school.

Also in the ‘62 Yearbook, in the Student Council section appears this interesting statement:
With true democratic spirit we, the students of Princess Elizabeth and O’Kelly High Schools, elected our Student Council Executives. This was a precedent in the history of the two schools as they had never before elected a student council.

…and my fuzzy memory, recalls going to grade 8 at Greenwood which would have been 1960 - 61. Greenwood memories could use more input. Do you have a Greenwood class photo?

The schools issue is open, what do you remember?
