Comments: Bill B.-that is neat to hear about Floyd's little "pirate radio station"! I did not know of that-very cool!
The poor old "Meatheads" get dragged over the coals by us guys-would love to have a conversation with a former MP to hear of their perspective on the challenges of policing a Forces community, with Federal and local Civil regulations complicated by rank and the local "pecking order" of rank!
My only direct encounter with them (being a fine, upstanding young lad with no vices-nudge, nudge!) occurred one Friday summer night after dark when two buddies (for the life of me-I can't remember whom!) and I were cutting across the sports field on the east side of PEHS on our way home from somebody's PMQ on the north side of Shilo. Suddenly we were blinded by two very bright flashlights and told to freeze. Two VERY BIG meatheads then appeared from behind the flashlights and asked us a bunch of questions about who we were, where we had been, where were we going, etc. etc, and told us to show them our hands-which they examined with great interest with their flashlights.
They then took us to the "paddy wagon", and abruptly shoved us in the back, slammed the door and took off at high speed towards the east side of camp.
After about three minutes, they slammed on the brakes, opened the back door, told us to get out and go straight home-with the explanation that they had apprehended the "wrong guys"!
We heard later that some new PMQ's under construction at the time (summer of '63) had been vandalized by some BAD Brats, including buckets of paint splattered all over the interiors-hence, their interest in the condition of our hands. Scared me straight!! Poor old Meatheads-just doin' their job.
Another little forgettable Shilo vignette.

Comments: Does anyone remember Floyd Turner's Radio Station? He broadcast out of his bedroom on Kingston Av. He played the music of the day and talked. He lived right across the street from me.
It wasn't long the Meatheads tracked him down with their electronic equipment and shut him down. Have no idea why, he was just having fun and had very limited range, I believe it did not even cover all of Shilo.

Comments: Hey, Greg-how are ya?
I can't recall exactly Doug and I found the wire-out back behind the PMQ's somewhere. It was easy to run the wire as our upstairs bedrooms were directly on opposite sides of Sapper Ave.
We actually had a working telegraph using model train transformers as the power sources, and copper wire and nails as the telegraph senders/receivers. There must have been just enough amperage through the wire to break the magnetic field running the nail head morse code receiver! Good thing it was such low voltage!
I remember you and Dave B. doing stuff too-you were "nerds" just like Doug & I!
I see you are in Creston-we are just north of you in Riondel on Kootenay Lake!

Comments: Such a great site, I haven't been on this site for quite awhile, feels like I haven't missed a beat with all these Shilo memories. Was there from 64 to 1970. My father was with the RCHA and my parents are both still alive. My father is a very young looking 91 year old, Russell Kaye.
Comments: Bill - I gotta ask what you and Doug were doing with the signal wire? I remember Dave Bourassa and I concocting some variation of a TeslaCoil in his basement and causing a few sparksto fly - but signal wire episode escapes me !
Comments: Edie, Doug Jordan - a parcel from me is on the way. Doug - yours should be there by the end of the week. I put a letter inside, but forgot to sign it. Edie - hopefully your parcel will arrive in GMI by the end of the month. I forgot to put the letter inside, so it will be separate. I've been doing e-mail for everything for so long, I've forgotten how to do snail mail!
Comments: You are right Edie - Ken and Lonnie keep the site going and growing. Tireless workers. Thanks to you both and to the other members of the team.
