For those 60's Shilobrats not on Facebook, and also for those who are, the following message was posted today in the Facebook Group 'Obits of Shilobrats'

It is with great sadness that we find that "Brian Howie peacefully passed away this afternoon in Richmond General Hospital with his wife and daughters and me at his bedside."
This message from his brother Bruce Howie.

Brian Howie, a ShiloBornBrat, inspired a generation of Shilobrats towards music and the arts. As a tribute to his memory, what are your memories of Brian.

Heading to Brandon on Wednesday to see my mom and do some taxes. My brother Wayne is coming in too, but too bad we won't be there long enough to plan a visit among Shilobrats!! But we'll be thinking of you all. :!kiss:

Reading Bill's account of his "meat head" experience brought to mind my first real encounter with our beloved red caps.In fact it was on my second summer of military training when our little group was sent to Shilo for second phase artillery training, part of which was to learn how to operate military vehicles. For some reason our course officer allowed us all to get jeeps for the weekend and we had free reign in driving them thru the sand dunes. As you can imagine this was not too shabby for a bunch of 19-20 year olds until we ran out of gas and the transport pumps were closed. Not willing to give up we pooled our cash and lined up at Canex to get gas. Who should come by but a MP patrol who wanted to know what we were doing and why. To my embarrassment when they found out my parents were still in Shilo, my father was called to the station to account for us (which he did rather reluctantly) but managed to get us out. Of course we did not know that the MPs also sent a report to the CO who was far less lenient then my father. It was our first exposure to extra shifts as a duty officer to pay for our crimes but like Bill said the MPs were "just doing their jobs" But they seemed to enjoy that one a bit too obviously. Cheers

To the class of '85 it has been thirty years since we all walked the halls of high school together. It is time for a get together this summer. I have picked two dates July 3-5 or July 10-12 I know this wont work for everyone but it would be nice to see as many as possible and that includes all grade 12's NOT JUST THOSE THAT GRADUATED. I look forward to hearing from as many as possible

Bill and Ken, you guys have good memories. That was over 50 years ago. Ken, I'd forgotten that I took that gear to school and set it up.

I have to thank Wayne Coulson's dad for the oscillator that I used in that transmitter. I've always been thankful to him for encouraging my interest in electronics. I made a 37 year career out of it.

My little radio station only covered about a 3 block area. The only complaint I ever received was good natured ribbing from Jim Gradwell who said my music would flood over whatever radio station he was listening to when he drove his old Studebaker past my house. I just told him to buy a Ford. ;)

Yes Bill B, I remember Floyd Turner's radio station, it was around 1964, he brought his transmitter to school one day, and him and I secretly set it up in the lab room. He played tape recorded songs by The Saints (Brian & Bruce Howie & Rennie Sirianni) Shilo's first rock band, and advertised the upcoming annual Variety Show. I wandered the halls with a transistor radio telling everyone, listen, The Saints are being played on CKY (the top Winnipeg radio station). That's why the meatheads shut him down, he was cutting in to the CKY frequency to over half the base. :!bandit:
