Hi, I just found this site, what a visit down memory lane. Lived in Shilo during my teen years. 1962-65. Recognized most names and faces.
Wish I had known about the reunion I would of come for sure.
My parents were Capt. Paul and Doris Robitaille.
Saddened to read about all our departed friends, many were close friends growing up.
So happy I came across this site and renewed my happy memories growing up in Shilo.

English surnames were derived from your position in life or the type of work you were involved in. A blacksmith evolved to Smith, a person who milled grain for flour was a Miller. The process of milling resulted in a lot of dust, hence the nickname Dusty.

Hi. will Murphy here again. Hi Floyd. As I mentioned before in these posts Our family lived on Ubique Ave.. Your family and ours were friends. I was born 1948. We left Shilo in late 1960. I certainly remember the Hamer family name. Floyd as a young boy I recall more than one birthday party with the kids. I remember your Mum would put nickels or quarters or some coinage in the birthday cakes. Wrapped in wax paper. ....Birthday parties in Shilo were always fun.
... I went on to Air Force in Fire Fighter ..Crash Rescue..

thanks for the suggestion, Barb. A reader of my blog gave me the same reference but I doubt the nickname comes from a plant Bill's example of Pro ball player seems more likely but I have a feeling it has a military origin. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Hi Gerry. We lived in the next duplex to you back then at 107 Kingston. My parents (Floyd & Chris) were friends with your parents. Two of my sisters, Gwen & Brenda, almost ten years older than me, were teenagers then and hung out with your sisters Lorraine and poor Yvonne. I remember few other details from almost 70 years ago, but oddly I recall your dad having an old Chevrolet and I believe one of your older brothers and me shared the same birthday, January 24th. Happy New Year!

Doug, Wikipedia also mentions a Dusty Miller who played Major League baseball in the late 1800's.

Perhaps the nickname originated with him?
